Why Comics?
I have been working as a cartoonist for 11 years, and riso printing for around 9. The goal of this project was to apply the skills I had acquired in design school to my comics making practice. I used this book as an opportunity to showcase my abilities as a hand letterer, and craft considerate layouts to move the reader through the narratives. The comics were made with limited time over the course of two years. I saw my illustration style become more simplified, while my layouts improved immensely. The work is not presented in chronological order, but the changes in style are noticeable from comic to comic.
Risograph Printing: Risographs are a direct descendent of the mimeograph. The process of riso printing is generally described as a combination of photocopying and screenprinting. Images are burned into a stencil (referred to as a master) wrapped around a cylinder coated in ink (referred to as a drum). The drum rolls over paper fed through the machine, creating an impression. Each drum corresponds with a color of ink, so one color is laid down at a time. Each printed image requires it’s own master. When a new master is made, the printer discars the previous master, never to be used again.
Bye For Now was printed on an MZ1090 using Medium Blue, and Flo Orange ink.
